Dr. Paulino: Cattle

Today I ate:
Breakfast: nothing
Lunch: A slice of pizza

What was Pollan's purpose for introducing steer 534?

The purpose of introducing steer 534 was to explain one of the lives of a cattle, just so the readers understand how cattle used to live. This cattle grew the old fashion way for six months; steer 534 was grown in a shed and ate grass like all regular cattle should have. In the book it says," Steer number 534 spent his first six months in these pastures alongside his mother..." (pg.50). In the book it also states,"He chose from a salad bar of grasses: western wheatgrass, little bluestem, buffalo grass, green needle grass,"(pg.50). This cattle did once live in a shed and at the healthy green grass, but now steer 534 has been at Poky for a few months and will never have the opportunity to eat green grass again.

  1. I found that you ate nothing interesting from your post because I have to eat breakfast for me to have a good day.
The statement you said, "The purpose of introducing steer 534 was to explain one of the lives of a cattle, just so the readers understand how cattle used to live." connects with a similar idea I had because I also wrote that Pollan introduced the cattle to give us an example of what it is like for cows.
I would like to extend on your thought when you said, "...will never have the opportunity to eat green grass again." because it would also be important to include that the cows are used to eating grass.
I would like to disagree with nothing you said.
