What are farmers risking by using nitrogen rich soil to grow corn quickly?
Farmers risk a tremendous amount by using nitrogen rich soil to grow corn quickly.it was not only the farmers but the government and factories. The nitrogen fertilizers cause pollution, health damage and slowly destroys the environment. The idea of fertilizing farmlands with bomb material came shortly after WWII due to the surplus bomb material. Scientist in the department of agriculture had the idea of spreading ammonium nitrate on farmlands as a fertilizers. This very action started the fertilizer industry and the pesticide industry that was based on poison gases. Due to the nitrogen more fuel is wasted to produce crops the text states, "That's around seventy-five gallons of oil per Acer of corn."(32) this is like wasting 10.3 quads of fuel to produce corn yet we only receive 1.4 quads from the crop. These action can and will lead to our destruction while others think it leads us to a new era in which we prosper.
