Michael pollan introduces steer 534 because it shows how cows are grown up and put into a feedlot. As shown in the book steer 534 went from a ranch to a feedlot. Where the ranch was when it was next to its mom eating grass. But then as the life of a cattle steer 534 had to go to a feedlot to be made into a "meat machine". Also shown in the book steer 534 life was miserable when it went to the feedlot because it was being made into a machine although it was a a living organism. By including steer 534 it conveys how cows are being grown up in the industrial food chain.
