Dr. Paulino: Fertilizer

What are farmers risking by using nitrogen rich soil to grow corn quickly?

Farmers are risking a lot when using nitrogen rich soil to grow corn quickly. This is because in the book the author says that some of this nitrogen evaporates into the air, this creates acid rain. The author also says that some of the nitrogen turns into nitrous oxide, this is a gas that increases global warming. Also, the use of nitrogen rich soil to grow corn quickly cause the farmers not to be able to drink the water there. In the book it states, "Because of this, the Naylors don't drink the well water on their farm. When I went to pour myself a glass of water in the kitchen, Georges wife, Peggy, made sure I used a special faucet connected to water filter system,"( pg.34). Because of the nitrogen rich soil used to grow corn quickly, the Naylors had to use a special faucet to drink water and also this nitrogen can cause more global warming.
