Dr. Paulino: Hunter-Gatherer

Is it possible for the hunter gatherer food chain to be practical in the U.S.?

I believe that its not possible for the hunter gatherer food chain to be practical in the U.S. I think this because I don't think people would go hunting and gathering their own food more than before, now that you can just buy organic food. Also, in the book they go gathering for mushrooms, but there are more poisonous mushrooms than safe ones. So why would I risk gathering mushrooms instead of just buying them and know that those mushrooms are safe to eat. In the book it states, "What I had in mind was a dinner made entirely from the foods I had hunted, gathered, and grown myself,"(pg.205). Now there are a lot of people who wouldn't even get up to go to the supermarket so what should make me think that hunting for your own food is better? In the book it also states, "Only around 100 of the nearly 10,000 different kinds of mushrooms-just 1 percent! - are safe to eat,"(pg.206). This is an example of a reason why I believe it's not possible for the hunter gatherer food chain to be practical in the U.S. I don't think people are going to risk eating a poisonous mushroom just to make food that you gathered yourself. I believe that it's not possible for the hunter gatherer food chain to be practical in the U.S.
