Dr. Uwawuike: Reflection
Michael Pollan definitely influenced me about my eating habits because he included a myriad of examples, diagrams, the truth, and statistics that made me wonder about what was going into my mouth. It is stated in the text "Seventeen percent of kids age six through nineteen are obese. This is a giant public health problem, costing the health care system an estimated $90 billion a year."(76) It is also stated in the text "It's true there's a little door in each shed leading out a narrow grassy yard. But here's the catch: The door remains firmly shut until the birds are at least five weeks old. But that time they are used to the shed that none of them go outside. And then all of them get slaughtered two weeks later." These two quotes show the ways that the author influenced me about my eating habits, he used statistics and told/showed me the truth about the chickens I eat. This influenced me because it made me feel bad for the chickens and make me not want to eat chicken again(although I still eat it). It also made me afraid about eating because I didn't want to become obese. Therefore, Michael Pollan influenced me by using examples like statistics and telling me the truth.

Dr. Uwawuike,
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting how you stated that Pollan "made (you) feel bad for the chicken... although (you) still eat it". What affects your decision to eat it, even thought you partially don't want to eat it? Thanks for sharing!
