Dr.Paulino:local sustainable reflection

I believe that the benefits outweigh the risks. I say this because there aren't as many risks as benefits. A benefit is that the chickens manure can be used to fertilize the grass. In the text it states, " the chicken manure fertilizes the grass, supplying all the nitrogen it needs,"(pg.163). Another benefit can be that because of the chickens, joel (a farmer), doesn't have to treat the cows with toxic chemicals. One last benefits is that the scratching of the hens turns the chips and rabbits nitrogen-rich urine into compost, which can help the grass grow. A risks of the local sustainable is that if chickens stay in one place, their manure can destroy the soil. In the text it states," but left in one place, the chickens would eventually destroy the soil,"(pg.163). This is the only risk in the local sustainable food chain, it's also really bad. Without the soil the farmers won't have any food for the cattle.
